Snowed in [Aldrich and Roderich] Empty
PostSubject: Snowed in [Aldrich and Roderich]   Snowed in [Aldrich and Roderich] EmptySun Jan 09, 2011 5:34 pm

Finally, Aldrich made it to the children's ward, after about half an hour of misdirection and confusion. Nobody here was of any help, those who did stop, were in such a rush, that they all just seemed to point where he needed to go, often in to walls. Well that would have been fine, if he could walk through walls.

And now he was late for a consultation. He didn't want to seem incompetent, he was only new and he was working with a doctor he had never met before, the infectious diseases specialist, someone who he might have to work with again, and certianly wanted to make a good impression on.

He glanced at the room numbers, until finally, he came to the one he was looking for, that of a young boy with viral meningitis. This, in most cases, wouldn't be something a surgeon would consult on, or a very bad problem, however, the child was immunocompromised, and the disease was running rampant over his body, and they were worried it would cause encephalitis, or other complications.

He rushed in to the room, "Gott... sorry I'm late." He apologised, "It's my first week." He admitted, "I haven't really worked my way around properly yet." he explained, panting before straightening himself out. "Right, what has been going on?"

Roderich, luckily, was only mildly annoyed that the surgeon had failed to show up right away. He'd found a nurse to boss around in the meantime, ordering them to run a few more tests on the unfortunate child to help determine whether surgery would be truly necessary. As Aldrich came in, he was standing by the child's bedside, flipping through their chart--the complete one with all the blunt and gory details, as opposed to the short, more tactfully-worded one that was left outside of the door, within reach of anyone that came by.

"HCMV," he said curtly, brushing off Aldrich's apologies. "I suspect he had it before we began treating his glomerulosclerosis, but it only became symptomatic four days after setting him on immunosuppressants. He's eight years old, otherwise healthy, no history of diabetes or the like. I have him on Ganciclovir and he seems to be responding, but my concern is that we have already found evidence of mild intracranial bleeding. I want to know whether you think it should be surgically dealt with now, considering the possibility of worse conditions developing on top of that, such as encephalitis."

He pulled out a few CT images and handed them over to Aldrich, along with a couple pages of information documenting the child's progress. Much of them were in his own handwriting--a thin, neat script that was better than most doctors'--and the most recent contained remarks about medications for pain and how he didn't want to increase the dosage of the antiviral due to fears that the side effects might aggravate the child's kidney problems. As Aldrich looked through them, he crossed his arms, holding the chart to his chest and appearing rather distracted.

PostSubject: Re: Snowed in [Aldrich and Roderich]   Snowed in [Aldrich and Roderich] EmptyThu Feb 03, 2011 3:16 pm

Aldrich was very relieved that the doctor hadn't said anything about his tardiness, nodding along to what the doctor said. “Ja, Herr Edelstein,” He frowned and began to give his council. “Sugery is a high possiblilty, however, it is risky, I suggest we wait a week for a development before we discuss surgery as an option. Until then, I suggest an slight increase of dosage...his kidneys shouldn't be affected.” And he knew a great deal about kidney, after all.

All in all, it went well. In general, doctors didn't like working with slashers like him, and preferred working with specialised surgeons only if they had to. There was a certian rivalry between surgeons and and doctors, even if neither of the groups mentioned it or meant it. Doctors tended to think that surgery was simplistic, cutting a problem up instead of curing it. So it was good that he wasn't making any problems with the doctors so far, in this new hospital. He wondered how long that would last...

He began to leave the room, after a few moments more discussing, both with the doctor and the family, but paused just outside when he realised he was lost again. Damn. He frowned and paused, not sure what to go well.

((Ugh, sorry, fail post... I just wanted to post something after making you wait))

PostSubject: Re: Snowed in [Aldrich and Roderich]   Snowed in [Aldrich and Roderich] EmptyTue Feb 08, 2011 12:10 pm

The German title made him raise an eyebrow--but then again, Aldrich did have a thick accent, and perhaps he still was accustomed to speaking the language often, in spite of the years he'd spent in the states. Roderich had read his work and education history, of course (he did so for most staff he had to meet with for the first time, just to get a sense of how much he ought to trust them), but it hadn't said much besides those details, and he found himself a bit curious as to where Aldrich was from, exactly.

"All right," he said, nodding. "We'll wait and see."

The talk of increasing dosage drew a little skepticism from him, but further conversation brought him around to the idea. Aldrich did seem very knowledgeable about the subject--he'd certainly done some research as well on the side effects of the drug, Roderich could tell--and his experience was enough that Roderich felt comfortable deferring to his judgment. Overall, he seemed a reasonable man, and Roderich's respect for him went up as well as he went ahead with talking to the family, tactful with the possibilities and risks. It was always nice to have someone else around to speak to the emotional and potentially accusatory relatives, especially since Roderich had a bad (though well-concealed) habit of taking their accusations personally.

He headed out a few moments after Aldrich after updating the patient's chart, setting it in the plastic case mounted beside the doorway. Aldrich's confusion was apparent, and Roderich felt a smile cross his face as he watched him hesitate. Ah, been there, done that. Roderich had no sense of direction himself, and he'd gotten lost more than once in the poorly-labeled halls during his own first few weeks of work.

"Where are you headed?" he asked, a light tinge of amusement in his tone.

Aldrich noticed the doctor looking at him and hurriedly tried to mask his confusion, not wanting to seem incompetent after he had made a good impression. Or at least, what he hoped was a good impression. “I was headed for the ICU.” He said as the other one spoke, slightly annoyed by the amusement he heard on to the other’s voice, but not commenting, because after all, the man had been rather polite to him, “I’m not sure how to get to it from this part of the hospital Perhaps you could just point me in the right direction? I’m sure I’ll find my way there eventually.”

He reached up to brush his hair out of his face, respite the fact that currently it was tied up for hygiene reasons, it was just a habit. He eyed the corridor, he usually had such a good sense of direction, but in a hospital, everyone moved around and anything stationary was very similar to each other. He wished he was back in his old hospital, which had clear lines on the floor, colour coded with direction. Now he couldn’t even remember which way he had come from.

“My sense of direction usually isn’t this bad,” He shook his head, trying to qualify his confusion. “But I just keep getting turned around here.”

He took a moment to study the other man. He was a few years younger than himself, but not by much, he didn’t believe. He was…German? The accent wasn’t quite right, probably Austrian. He certainly knew what he was doing, and he was competent, Aldrich certainly trusted him with the life of that young boy. To Aldrich, he seemed like he would make a good colleague, maybe even friend, though he wouldn’t want to step over the line when probably an amicable working relationship was probably the best.

"I'll walk you down," he said. "It's a few floors up and a bit out of the way. I've got a couple minutes to spare."

He gave a chuckle. "It is very confusing around here. It must've taken me a good ten minutes to find where my office was on my first day. You become accustomed to how things are situated soon enough, though."

He beckoned to Aldrich, turning leftwards. He'd noted Aldrich's mild annoyance but disregarded it, more through habit than anything--because he was a specialist and was typically called in to fairly nasty and stressful situations, he tended to be quite the pragmatist, prone to giving orders and expecting doctors and nurses to follow them. If Aldrich needed to get to the ICU and he thought it best to lead him there, he was going to lead him there, without offering him a choice in the matter. It wasn't very polite of him, really, but it was the way he approached things if he wasn't being actively conscientious.

Swiftly he followed Dr Edelstein, realising that he was one of those doctors who did what they wanted and expected you to follow or else be left behind, not that he hadn't already had an inkling judging by the way he had been during the differential. He wouldn’t complain, he needed to get up to the ICU.

“Dank...” He nodded, hurrying after him so he was walking by his side, only just behind. "You're Austrian, correct?"

A bit of surprise crossed Roderich's features. Considering that Aldrich was most likely not paranoid enough to look up other people's credentials on the database (unlike himself), he must've managed to pin Roderich's accent as Austrian, which was fairly impressive. Roderich's accent wasn't all that thick, really, and more than one doctor had assumed he'd just grown up in some high-class, fancily-talking family in the States.

"Yes," he said, adding in brisk German, "I grew up in Vienna and came to America for graduate school. You're from Germany, I imagine?"

He caught the gaze of a passing nurse as he came to stand in front of the elevator. She was someone he'd worked with before and her eyes were wide as she listened to him speaking in his native tongue. Another person who'd misjudged his nationality, he figured, and offered her a small smile as he pushed the elevator button.

He wasn't sure why Dr Edelstein looked so surpised. Yes, he didn't have a strong accent, but Aldrich recognised the intonations of his own language, and the differences between German and Austrian.

He smiled, listening to his mother tongue, even in the odd Austrian accent. "Yes," he replied easily in the language, "I'm from Berlin, as my accent shows, what do you know?" He asked, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. "I don't know the reigonal variations on Austrian." It was so nice to hear German again.

He noted the shock on the nurse's face and he supposed it was odd to see two doctors suddenly start talking in German, particularly because one didn't sound paticularly German or have a German name. How amusing... he folded his arms and waited for the lift to reach the correct floor.

"Sounded like it," Roderich said, stepping into the elevator as the doors slid open. "So what brought you to the States? A scholarship? Work opportunities?"

As the elevator began its ascent, Roderich felt a wave of dizziness wash over him. He shut his eyes briefly, figuring it was a consequence of the motion and his own questionable sleep schedule, not to mention the heat that seemed to be trapped inside. Normally it wasn't quite so stifling... Feigning casualness, he brought his hand to his forehead and promptly realized the heat was particularly apparent there.

His mind flitted back, in spite of himself, to the feverish MRSA patient that he'd been seeing for the past three days. What was the incubation period for MRSA? Was it even determinate? Perhaps, theoretically, it could be as little as twenty-four hours...

No--he ought not to be ridiculous. He was fine.

Aldrich looked awkwardly around, he didn’t really want to talk about what had happened to bring him to America, it was a personal issue. Still, he couldn’t simply leave it alone or it would make him more curious, “A desire for change,” He said stiffly, not wanting to divulge too much.

He leaned back, waiting patiently for the lift to finish. He noticed Dr Edelstein looking rather odd, but he didn’t mention anything for the time being, as he didn’t look like something was too wrong.

Finally, the lift opened and he stepped out, “Thank you, Herr Edelstein, I know my way from here.” He nodded politely, “I’ll see you at our next consult.” He smiled and walked off towards the ICU.

Ah, seemed as though that was a touchy subject. Well, Roderich wouldn't pursue it, then. There was no need to infringe on Aldrich's privacy.

As the doors opened, Roderich moved to step ahead of him, but at Aldrich's assertion he stopped, smiling.

"All right. See you later."

He pressed the button to another floor, attempting to ignore his lightheadedness. Did he still have a minute or two to spare? Maybe he could go sit down and shut his eyes for a bit. If it was mostly the warmth inside the elevator, that should do the trick... He slid up the sleeve of his labcoat to check his watch.

His breath hitched as he realized that there were red splotches on his hand.

Why, it was dermatitis, of course. He'd been washing his hands more often with the high-risk patients he had--that was all. The redness was just dryness, and those little marks were just places were he'd failed to notice the skin cracking and healing over. MRSA presented with more swelling and more of a blister-like appearance. He was being ridiculous and paranoid.

Maybe, though, maybe he just ought to check...

The elevator pulled up to the floor he wanted and he stepped out, stumbling a little, and made a beeline for where the supplies were kept. Not wanting to be questioned, he headed into the bathroom and slipped into the space between one of the stalls and the wall, placing the thermometer he'd grabbed beneath his tongue.

He waited, then held it up to read it.

101°F.

Oh, god.

That definitely wasn't just him feeling warm--he was ill. He'd been infected with something. He knew full well the numerous conditions that it couldn't be due to the vaccinations he'd had--flu, for instance, was extremely unlikely--but that left few possibilities, and all he could think of was that MRSA patient with their necrotizing, bloody abscesses...

He could have his blood tested for it. That involved culturing the bacterium, though, and took a few days--days in which the infection could reach its highest levels of resistance. If it was MRSA, he had to do something now, for himself and for his patients.

He debated with himself for a few moments, then quietly left to go write himself a prescription for minocycline, the drug he'd had his patient on before the widespread infection had gotten too severe. The pharmacist, thankfully, didn't ask questions.

Roderich took a dose of the pills with a glass of water, steadied himself and went to visit his next patient, careful to wash his hands as thoroughly as possible. His work couldn't just stop in the face of illness, after all.

Aldrich noded one last time at the doctor and was on his way. A few patients later - nothing interesting, just checking wounds and redressing them. One of the patients the wound had become ingected but it wasn't as dangerous as septicimia. He suggested a course of antibiotics for their doctor to implement and all was well.

He was surprised how soon he did see Dr Eddelstein, though it wasn't sheduled. They just happened to be working in the same room on different patients. But... hearing the few snatches of conversation that the other man had with his patient he couldn't help but think something was off, even from that morning. He started making elementary mistakes... nothing dangerous, thankfully but it didn't fit his character.

When he had finished he waited outside the door for Dr Eddelstein and when he exited, made his prescence known and gripped his arm. "Dr Eddelstein." He said concernedly, "Are you okay? You seem slightly unwell."

PostSubject: Re: Snowed in [Aldrich and Roderich]   Snowed in [Aldrich and Roderich] EmptyTue Jun 07, 2011 3:02 pm

Roderich jumped a bit in surprise--in spite of working in the same room as Aldrich, he hadn't spotted him. His gaze jumped to Aldrich's hand on his arm, immediately wondering whether he'd sanitized it, and he gently pulled away.

He couldn't just tell him about the MRSA--he didn't want to cause a scare, in spite of the fact that his hand hygiene was such that, out of anyone on the premises that might have contracted the contact-spread illness, he'd swear up and down that he was the least likely to spread it. Besides, he was on medication for it as well. The illness would clear up soon enough.

"I'm fine," Roderich insisted. "Just a bit tired."

Gosh, his dizziness seemed to have gotten worse, though. His head was starting to throb as well--the next chance he got a break, he would have to see what he could take for that that wouldn't interact with the minocycline. He walked away from Aldrich down the hall, trying to keep from staggering.

Aldrich would have been amused when Roderich all but yanked his arm away from him. Really, he was a surgeon - though the doctors often looked down on them, they were probably the cleanest people in the hospital. You could have dirty hands when you're putting them inside a patient's chest cavity, and after a while it just became a habit.

"You look tired," He agreed, even though he really think so. If he had to describe it, Dr Edelstein looked... well, he looked snowed. But that couldn't be, surely? He looked like he knew better than to self medicate, paticularlily at work. He shook off the thought, "On your next break, go have a nap." He said, and watched the doctor walk away, staggering slighlty, and became worried. He was endangering his patients, so... a little test was in order.

"Dr Edelstein," He called out, "I have a patient and I was wondering if you would help with the diagnosis as I belive it's an infection." He waited for the doctor to turn around, "A have a patient, caucasian male, 45, who presented with leisons on the rectum, and has recently developed condyloma latum, fever, sore throat, and optic neurosis causing partial vision loss." It seemed like an easy enough case to solve, and if Dr Edelstein could do it, Aldrich would leave him alone. However, if he got it wrong, Aldrich would be forced to relieve him of his duty.

He paused, resisting the urge to massage his forehead as Aldrich rattled off the symptoms. Well, yes, fever was indicative of an infection. Rectal lesions could point towards a sexually transmitted bacterium, or perhaps a localized parasite infection, or...

"Scabies exhibits lesions..." he muttered, trying to get his mind to work. "No. Fever would be unlikely. Maybe donovanosis? But the vision loss...give me a moment."

He stepped to the side of the hall, taking a deep breath and letting his eyes flicker shut. That brought a little relief for the headache, though not much.

"Herpes zoster," he said, "Will give you the optic damage, fever, and probably the sore throat. But rectal involvement isn't usual. ...You said condyloma, right? That's, um...no, not HPV, that wouldn't make sense at all..."

PostSubject: Re: Snowed in [Aldrich and Roderich]   Snowed in [Aldrich and Roderich] EmptyThu Jul 21, 2011 11:02 am

Aldrich stared in disbelief as Dr Edelstein struggled with the simple diagnosis. This was the sort of thing that a first year medical student should be able to work out; it was so basic. "Syphillis, it's syphillis, Dr Edelstein. I thought you were supposed to be an expert on infectious diseases." He grabbed him rather forcefully by the arm, "You are in no fit state to see patients, I'm relieving you of duty." He said.

Aldrich felt slight anger towards the doctor; putting his patients at risk, "What did you take?" He asked, dragging him away with a great deal of force. He would drive Roderich home, make sure he was safe, and then call the hospital, "What kind of symptoms are you having?" He shook his head, "What were you thinking; this is the kind of thing that causes a lawsuit."

He pulled Roderich in to his car not even caring about removing their scrubs. He didn't have any surgeries, well, none that couldn't be deferred to other attendings, and this was an emergency. It wasn't until he had gotten on to the busy roads of the highstreet that he realised he didn't know where Roderich lived.

(( Sorry if it seemed like I just rushed though all that ono;; ))

Snowed in [Aldrich and Roderich] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Snowed in [Aldrich and Roderich]   Snowed in [Aldrich and Roderich] EmptyTue Jul 26, 2011 10:06 pm

Aldrich, it seemed, was just as intense about protecting patients as Roderich was. He, however, didn't understand that Roderich was making absolutely sure not to pass a single contagion on to his patients. Even while his diagnostic prowess was slower than usual, Roderich's instincts for cleanliness were certainly ingrained enough into his habits to remain intact.

"I am," he huffed defensively, trying to yank his arm away again. "I told you; I'm tired. I have a headache, and I'm just trying to get through my most critical patients so that I--"

Aldrich's snappish inquiry silenced him for a moment. He considered lying, but he'd never been all that good at it and it certainly wouldn't make him seem any more fit to treat patients. Grudgingly, he admitted the name of the drug, knowing full well that Aldrich was aware of what it treated.

"Minocycline," he muttered.

That was enough for Aldrich to start forcibly dragging him. Roderich protested at first, insisting that the symptoms were ebbing away and the side effects weren't bad and because he'd caught the disease in its early stages he was apt to stop shedding the bacterium soon enough, but the way he was being pulled exacerbated his dizziness, and his objections soon grew detached. He did manage to shoot a very nasty glare at Aldrich as they stood in the elevator, but didn't dare open his mouth in case one of the nurses riding it down overheard. His being scolded about unsafe practices by a surgeon was a story that would gain a life of its own in hospital gossip if he let it.

"I'm over here," he said as they entered the parking lot, gesturing resentfully towards his car. A moment later, he recalled that his keys were still in his changing room locker--but Aldrich went for his own car instead, sparing Roderich the trouble. He sat gingerly, trying not to touch (or contaminate) too much of the interior, figuring that he'd have to enter his house through the garage tonight. A sigh escaped his lips as he noticed Aldrich's confusion.

"I'm in the suburbs. Head east on the freeway until you hit exit 5, then turn right and follow the street until you reach Kimbler. You're going to have to pick me up tomorrow morning, you know."

If he was allowed to return to work tomorrow morning, that is. He shuddered at the thought of sitting at home for a few days because of the administration finding out that he had MRSA. There were a few doctors that he could pretty much trust to take over for him, but it wasn't the same as being there, seeing every detail and making absolutely sure that everything was going the way it ought to. Why did this have to happen to him, of all people? He was more careful than anyone. He should never have gotten sick, much less with something transmitted through touch.
